Danube ClimateRide 2020
Welcome! This website provides information on the “Danube/Donau Climate Ride 2020” – an Independent Challenge undertaken by Jan Volkemer and Monika Weber-Fahr under the auspices of ClimateRide.org. In bringing attention to the climate change impacts on the Danube – and in fundraising for organizations that work to address climate change – we cycled 800 kilometers throughout 7 days, along the Danube, between August 23 and 29, 2020. We began the journey in Donaueschingen – and we concluded it, at kilometer 801, in Vienna, the first of the four capital cities that line this mighty river. The website includes 9 blogs that we wrote along the way, a section about the Danube itself and the organizations that take care of her, an “about” section that we use to explain our motivation, and a section on the logistics of the ride.
Alltogether we raised nearly 4000 US$, about twice as much as originally hoped for, thanks to the generosity and kindness of sponsors across family, friends and fellow bicyclists and climate change and water management activists. The funds will go to CDP, the Carbon Disclosure Project, a group that is working hard to change companies’ behaviors by publishing their carbon and water “footprint” – and by engaging with them on critically important improvements that are to be made to remain competitive. More details on our fundraising effort can be found on the ClimateRide.org website where Jan haD set up a specific space for his „Independent Challenge“.
